Had an entry for todays Brighton 10K which I have raced many times in the past but had decided the evening before after monitoring the weather situation that racing in the middle of Storm Angus in the midst of on shore winds of up to 70 MPH would not be wise and was fairly certain , given that the race which is 100% along promenade road , was likely to be cancelled. In the event got a text message from the organisers at 0740 hrs to say that the race had indeed been cancelled due to the extreme weather conditions. Happily as it turns out I had the back up alternative of running in the third race of the Kent Fitness League Cross Country series at Oxleas Woods in Eltham , South London. The previous two races in the league had been run in fairly benign mild weather mud free conditions so it came as a bit of a shock getting ready and lining up at the start in freezing wet conditions . And yes there was plenty of mud on a tough hilly but classic XC course with a good sprinkling of short challenging hills and equally challenging downhills , the odd fallen tree to hurdle and multiple tree roots to avoid. Who knows maybe this winter we may get to run one of these races in snow – remember snow ?
